⚠︎ Risk warning: leveraged derivatives on unregulated platforms — you can lose everything you deposit. Not investment advice.

KuCoin's European story is a licence that exists on paper and, at our last check, not in practice. KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH received an Austrian MiCA authorisation on 27 November 2025 — but the FMA's own notices since tell a rockier story, and none of it includes derivatives. Meanwhile the global platform has closed to new EEA users. No referral links here, per our methodology.

The essentials

Global entityPeken Global Limited, Turks and Caicos Islands (named in the CFTC's own 2026 consent order; ToS governed by TCI law) — re-domiciled from Seychelles in 2025
EU entityKuCoin EU Exchange GmbH — Austrian MiCA CASP (2025-11-27), licensed for custody, exchange, placing and transfer services: spot-type only, no derivatives (FMA's own grant notice)
EU entity statusFMA (2026-05-18): new-business ban lifted, but "the commencement of business operations still remains inadmissible" under a decision dated 2026-02-18 — check for newer FMA notices before assuming this has changed
EEA access (global)New EEA registrations closed; existing users continue "under regulatory uncertainty" per reporting on KuCoin's own migration notices
Perps (global)~680 pairs (live tracker figure); leverage up to ~125x varying per contract; USDT/USDC-margined
Fees (base)Reported 0.02% maker / 0.06% taker (secondary-corroborated; KuCoin's own table not machine-readable)

The Austrian saga, from the regulator's own pages

The FMA granted KuCoin EU its MiCA authorisation in November 2025 with the required anti-money-laundering officers in place. They then left; the FMA banned new business on 19 February 2026; replacements were hired; the ban was lifted on 18 May 2026 — and yet, in the FMA's own words, "the commencement of business operations still remains inadmissible due to an administrative decision dated 18.02.2026", because "all conditions under supervisory law have not yet been" met. Two takeaways for a European reader: as of that notice, there is no operating KuCoin EU platform at all; and even once it launches, the licence scope is spot-type services — perps would need a MiFID authorisation KuCoin has not announced.

On the record

Bottom line for a European reader

KuCoin is a "licensed" answer that currently answers nothing: the EU entity may not operate yet, its licence excludes perps anyway, and the global platform won't onboard you. The events to watch are an FMA notice permitting operations and any MiFID filing. For perps you can actually use lawfully in the EEA today, see the regulated track: OKX, Kraken, Bitstamp, Coinbase, One Trading.
